Motown Museum moves forward with $10 million federal earmark

The Motown team is celebrating reaching the $55 million milestone, she said. “We are in the midst of a celebration and we are so grateful to Senator Stabenow for leading us to such an important point.”

“Our hope is that sooner or later we will be able to raise the remaining funds, because that is the only way to stop inflation and everything else that we cannot control.”

Motown announced the project in the fall of 2016 and began work in 2019.

In August, the museum celebrated the completion of the first two phases of the project. Hitsville Next, a creative hub for new educational programs and entrepreneurship, is located nearby in three renovated buildings, Rocket Plaza with Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves, and Otis Williams.

The museum where Motown greats made history is housed in the Hitsville building at 2648 W. Grand Blvd.

The third phase will focus on building a two-story building that will house the Ford Motor Company theater, retail stores and immersive exhibits, Terry said.

The project is funded by contributors such as Ford Motor Company, Ballmer Group, Vera and Joseph Dresdner Foundation, Rocket Corporation, Gilbert Family Foundation, WK Kellogg Foundation, Hudson Weber Foundation, Cressge Foundation, and Bank of America. others.

Beyond expanding the main campus, the museum is moving forward with plans for a nearby property it acquired last year.

Motown purchased the property at 2550 W. Grand Boulevard, west of Rosa Parks Boulevard, part of a $5 million donation from Mackenzie Scott, Terry said. Scott is the ex-wife of Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeffrey Bezos.

The facility includes a 36,000-square-foot building and 195 spaces of gated surface parking that will provide the museum with nearly all of its parking needs for expansion. The museum is considering offering a shuttle from the lot to the museum for those who don’t want to walk.

As for the building, “it’s still being decided, but we know it will be used for additional programming,” Terry said.

The first floor is a very large open space that can be used for many purposes.
