Rochester business celebrates Lunar New Year


Rochester, New York — Lunar New Year celebrates the Year of the Rabbit. As retailers roll out food and decorations to mark special occasions, a Rochester couple is celebrating through business.

“It’s like Christmas time to come home,” said Ling Ren, owner of Asia Food Market. “So everyone needs to go home and stay together for a big family. If you have 10 brothers and 10 sisters, everyone is home. We celebrate Chinese New Year, eat together, and have fun together.”

Retailers have rolled out red lanterns and red envelopes for the Year of the Rabbit.

Owners Rockey and Ling Ren opened the first Asian Food Market location in the Rochester area in 2007. It soon expanded to several locations in upstate New York, including Buffalo, Syracuse, and Ithaca.

“I have been here for nearly 30 years,” said Ling Ren. “When I came here, there weren’t many supermarkets with fresh seafood. I grew up by the ocean, so I need to eat seafood. It was to open a market for the world, and that’s why we opened it.”

The couple felt they were missing Asian food, which is a big part of their culture, and decided to create their own.

“We tried to find a bigger Chinese restaurant, but we couldn’t find one around here,” Rocky Ren said. “And me and his wife decided to open an Asian grocery store here. One more thing for him is that he wants to serve the Asian community here.

They offer a variety of food options.

“Peking duck is a traditional Chinese dish that everyone eats in their homes and when their neighbors need it,” said Ling Ren. “And there’s still barbecued whole pigs. It’s a very traditional thing because not many people in the Rochester area cook these, and many people go to restaurants and get them. because you can’t.”

We also distribute food from all communities in Asia.

Rocky Ren said, “We have the power to offer more products and serve better, so we have better options and better serve our community, the community in Asia.” is needed.

We want to offer not only a taste of Asian cuisine, but also a sense of culture.

“The Asian community is still small, so please support the Asian community,” said Ling Ren. “We need to grow big.”

They still want to remind everyone to welcome the New Year as they serve their customers on one of the busiest weekends of the year.
